American Fork, Utah—On Saturday the 28th of May, Katie Terry arrived home with neighbors and volunteers from the Heart 2 Home Foundation cheering her.
Disabled in a car accident nine years ago, and raising two children with disabilities herself, Katie is paralyzed from the waist down. Her home was not equipped for wheelchair accessibility.
Katie came to the attention of the Heart 2 Home Foundation, a non-profit foundation that puts community and corporate volunteers to work for home makeovers, as she served as a volunteer. The foundation decided that Katie’s home could use a makeover itself just as much as the people she was serving.
Heart 2 Home sent Katie and her two children away from their home for several days while volunteers got to work tearing out counters, cabinets, flooring and then putting together an accessible and newly designed home.
HomeRight brought in PaintStick EZ Twists for the volunteers, which helped them quickly paint almost every room in the house in dramatically less time. This allowed the volunteers to rapidly move on to other projects in the house so everything could be completed before the reveal.
Katie leads a very active and inspirational life. The former college soccer and basketball player now plays wheelchair basketball, has learned to water ski, rock climb, golf and handcycle.
